The Gate of Supreme Harmony (Taihemen) is the highest gate in the Forbidden City. During the early Ming Dynasty the emperor met here with his officials and military officers every morning. During the Qing Dynasty the emperor held banquets, ceremonies and received presents here. The emperor also met foreign envoys and dignitaries here.
Bridging the Inner Golden Stream, five marble and stone arches bridge water which comes from the moat. Only the emperor could use the central of the five - known as the Imperial Bridge. The next two bridges were reserved for members of the imperial household and were known as the Nobles Bridges. The last two, known as the High Ranking Officials Bridges were for officials above the third grade.
