Venues will open around Christmas time depending on the weather. Snow and ice festivals have taken place in Harbin for decades, mainly in Zhaolin Park south of the river. In 2000, winter events began on Sun island featuring large buildings and structures which dwarfed previous activities in Zhaolin Park. However the intimacy, ice carving contest and night lighting in Zhaolin Park still make it a must see in addition to the activities on Sun Island. On Sun Island you can visit Ice and Snow World which is especially nice when lit up in the evening. It is a colorful city of ice. Rather than using ice as a building material, you can see structures made of snow at the Snow Sculpture Park on Sun Island. A walk up the Zhongyang Pedestrian Street makes for great people watching, architecture spotting, coffee, snacks, dining, photo opportunities, and of course shopping. A hotel on this street is recommended for convenience. |
